AkzoNobel plans further increase of chloromethanes capacity

06/07/2018

Euro Chlor member company, AkzoNobel Specialty Chemicals, has plans for a second expansion of chloromethanes capacity at its site in Frankfurt, Germany.

Building on works announced last year, that were completed recently, the current phase will take place over the next five years, raising total capacity by up to 50%. It is thought that this will also occur alongside efforts to expand chlorine production, which is the key raw material for chloromethanes.

Knut Schwalenberg, Executive Committee Member responsible for Industrial Chemicals, noted that “continued investments in both chlorine and chloromethanes production will increase reliability of supplies across the entire value chain to support the growth plans of our customers, while increasing energy efficiency thanks to the use of the latest technology."

This expansion will support companies that use chloromethanes (like methylene chloride, chloroform and carbon tetrachloride) in the manufacture of products such as pharmaceuticals, construction materials, water treatment chemicals and electronics.
